I've never really taken the time to look into it very deeply before but here are some thoughts. 1) Ignoring Exo 20:4, for the moment, if you look at Exo 20:5, then you can see that the injunction against pecelim ("carved images&quot is related to worship, "You shall not bow to them or serve them!". 20:4 seems a little broad but we can, at the least, see that it is, at its core, about worship. 2) Does this apply to any kind of image? That is far less certain. The jewish tradition is to err on the side of caution, thus any image. Also, does this apply to paintings, sketches, and photographs as well? The commandment isn't clear but the answer seems to be "no". The OT is very specific that images of plants and cherubim were allowable on the walls of the Temple while stars, the Moon, and the Sun (as I remember) were allowed on the curtains of the Inner Sanctum. It seems, therefore, likely that the commandment is directed against images of worship. Mind you, not against images of beings to whom you might pray, in the name of Yahoweh, for protection or to carry a message otherwise, images of the cherubim would not have been allowed in the Temple. This must be specifically directed against images that you might worship as a god. 3) As a further example of the problem of defining the type of image that was banned by this commandment, note Judges 18 and 1 Sam 19 as examples. In these chapters Micah had a pecel (18:17) and David / Michal had a teraf. Both seem to have been acceptable to Yahoweh. I am not certain what Micah's pecel was (it was specified as "the pecel" so it had a specific identity which extended beyond Micah's family) but Michal's teref was probably a pecel of an ancestor of Michal / Saul who acted as an intermediary (possibly even having become one of the 'elohim as had Samuel by 1 Sam 28:13) to Yahoweh. With those thoughts in mind, I'll go ahead and say that your acquaintance is fine under the commandments. If someone chooses to worship one of hir carvings (or photos) as a god, then your acquaintance is still fine. After all, people can pick a stone, tree, or mountain and worship a god through it. As for icons and other religious symbols used to represent intercessors between a person praying and Yahoweh, well, there is considerable difference of opinion on that point but Yahoweh doesn't seem to have objected to the practice in the OT so I give Catholics and such a lot of leeway on this point.
