I was looking on the internet and came across very bright and colorful donkey piñatas.  The piñata is a fun party game that is enjoyed by people of every age. A piñata is hung at a certain height, and players take turns hitting the piñata with a stick until it breaks and goodies fall to the ground and is collected by the party goers.

When I saw these donkey piñatas, I thought piñatas are made to be hit; but not real donkeys.Cartoons of talking donkeys came to my mind. There are Hunky and  Spunky, Baba Looey (Quick Draw McGraw sidekick),Eeyore from Winnie-the-Pooh and many more. Of course, donkeys can't really talk, right? Well, there is a donkey in the Bible that asked its rider, "What have I  done to you to make you beat me three times?"
(Numbers 20:28). Can you imagine a donkey talking to you? Balaam talks to a donkey.

There is humor to this story, As is sometimes the case when people who think about money and are blinded to other more important matters going on around them.

The Israelites were being led to the Promised Land by God and were commanded by God to destroy all of the current residents of that land. They had just finished their task of wiping out the Amorites and the Moabites were next. The people of Moab were terrified because there were so many Israelites. In fact, Moab was filled with panic because of the people of Israel.

Balak was the king of Moab at the time. He was going to pay Balaam to put a curse on the Israelites.  He asked Balaam to come meet him. Balaam rode a donkey to go meet Balak. Balaam apparently can't curse the Israelites without receiving permission from God first. He must get the go- ahead. God does not allow him to curse the people He has blessed. God was upset with Balaam's decision and sent an angel of the Lord to block the road. The donkey could see the angel but Balaam couldn't.The first time the donkey went way off the road into a field. Then the donkey got to close to a wall and crushed Balaam's foot against the wall. Having hit the donkey on each of these occasions, Balaam really got angry when the donkey laid down under him. When he struck the donkey for the third time, a strange thing happened.  " Then the Lord opened the mouth of the donkey, and it said to Balaam,  " What have I done to you to make you beat me three times?"

The next few verses show Balaam having a conversation with his donkey about what what just happened. Balaam was still so blinded that he did not realize that it was the donkey talking to him because he spoke right back to the donkey. Balaam answers, " Because you have abused me. I wish there were a sword in my hand, for now I would kill you."

The conversation continues, " Am I  not your donkey in which you have ridden, ever since I became yours, to this day? Was I  ever disposed to do this to you?" Balaam responds "No"
( Numbers 22: 22- 30).

Then the Lord opens Balaam's eyes, and he sees the angel who asks, " Why have you struck your donkey these three times? Your way is perverse before me. The donkey saw me and turned aside from me these three times. If she had not turned aside, surely I would have also killed you"
(Numbers 22:32-33). The irritating donkey has saved his life. Realizing the stupidity of his behavior, Balaam confesses,"I have sinned, for I did not know that you stood in the way against me. Now, therefore, if it displeased you, I will turn back."

Balaam was blinded by his greed and the thoughts of money that he failed to see what he ought to have seen. He was going to have that money if it cost him everything. It took a supernatural act of God to open his eyes to see what he was doing.

Are you like Balaam, most concerned about your wealth and how you are regarded in the culture around you? Do those things matter to you more than what the Lord is trying to tell you or what he is showing you? If so, don't hit the donkey. Make sure you're on the right path. Look for the angel. If you have been blinded by anything or worry what others say. Don't hit the donkey, pray and confess you are a sinner, and that you will do God's  will, not your own.
