Most people who identify as Christians in this world, never really give much thought to the fact that God doesn’t speak plainly throughout the scriptures. As a matter of fact, they have either been taught the very opposite (that he DOES speak plainly) or they have assumed that he does.
The general train of thought is, “if I write a book, wouldn’t I want everyone to understand it?”. Then they answer, “of course I would”. Therefore, a conclusion is made that God wrote the Bible the same way.
However, despite the fact that there are mountains upon mountains of passages that can be brought forward to demonstrate that anything but clear language is being used, the reader that believes this book was written in plain and simple language, continues in their belief that you can just read the Bible for what it says and understand it as it’s plainly written.
THE FIRST MISTAKE
The first mistake these readers make is assuming that the Bible can be compared to any other book. I emphasize the word “assuming” because nowhere does the Bible clearly, nor in a roundabout way even suggest that to be so.
Isaiah 55:8
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.
THE SECOND MISTAKE
The second mistake is once again assuming that since books are written to be easily understood by the targeted reader, and since an earthly author goes the extra length to clearly put his thoughts on paper for others to understand, then it must be the same way with God and His book, the Bible. Again, I emphasize the word “assuming” because nowhere does the Bible clearly, nor in a round about way even suggest that to be so.
Proverbs 1:5-6
A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels: 6 To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.
THE THIRD MISTAKE
The third mistake is denying the fact that the entire Bible was written in such a way to conceal a deeper, spiritual and far more important truth than that which we read on the surface. A truth which has been reserved only for those who truly have the Spirit of God within them and are willing to search it out.
1 Corinthians 2:11-14
For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. 13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they (God’s Words)are spiritually discerned.
It’s amazing that people who believe they are saved yet deny the spiritual meanings within the Word of God, have no problem claiming to be filled with the Spirit of God, or to be called a spiritual person, or to speak with a “spiritual tongue” or to be “slain in the spirit”.
In other words, they have no problem emphasizing spiritual things about themselves, yet they deny that the Bible has spiritual meaning within the entire text, they say "it’ plain text, written for all to understand". But where did they get these ideas if it did not come from the scriptures? It came from their own minds but has been accepted as gospel itself.
Why is it difficult for so many Christians to acknowledge that there is spiritual truth hidden within the seemingly plain text? Because this deeper truth has been reserved only for those who are truly within of the kingdom of God.
Matthew 13:9-13
Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. 10 And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables? 11 He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them IT IS NOT GIVEN. 12 For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath. 13 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing SEE NOT; and hearing they hear not, NEITHER DO THEY UNDERSTAND.
Mark 4:9-12
And he said unto them, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. 10 And when he was alone, they that were about him with the twelve asked of him the parable. 11 And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables: 12 That seeing they may see, AND NOT PRECEIVE; and hearing they may hear, AND NOT UNDERSTAND; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them.
Matthew 13:34 -35
All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable SPAKE HE NOT UNTO THEM: 35 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.
John 8:43
Why do ye not understand my speech? even because YE CANNOT HEAR my word....
Not being able to hear God’s Words has nothing to do with not being able to physically hear it as it’s being read, but it has everything to do with not being able to understand that which is being read because it’s spiritual and because of not belonging to God, even if you think you do.
John 8:47
He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.
