A number of years ago, a hurricane struck Florida. Whole towns were devastated. One mother survived with her children in her arms, even though her roof had been ripped from her apartment complex.
When she was interviewed by a reporter, he asked her how she had found the hope to hold on when the entire world seemed to be against her.
She smiled and said God showed her the storm would eventually end. When the eye of the hurricane passed over her, the sun shined in the midst of the devastation, and she felt God tell her that he was the eye in the midst of the storm, and that no matter what happened, he would be there with her.
Spiritual discouragement is one of the devil’s deadliest tools. In Numbers 21:4 we read that as the children of Israel traveled in the desert, the soul of the people was much discouraged due to the journey.
There are three examples given to us in the Word that reveal to us how to get through the storms that come our way.
Example #1:
Ephesians 6:12 tells that Paul wrestled against principalities. He indicated he felt he had no way out. Yet, in 2 Corinthians 4:16-17, we learn that when Paul was in the midst of a very hard time, he said that his troubles were temporary.
Paul had learned that he would be delivered, even though the possibility of death was his daily companion.
Example #2:
In Luke 18:1-8 there is the story of the widow who went before the magistrate. When there was no response, she returned again and again. Even though he did not want to answer her pleas, he was finally worn down by her persistence.
Luke tells us that men ought always to pray and not faint. To be strong in our faith, we must take the opportunity to pray and to be frequent in our coming before him.
Example #3:
Galatians 6:9 tells us to not be weary in well doing. When things seem to stagnate, and we are getting nowhere, we must not give up.
God has called the believer to a specific job. We may be teachers, shepherds, janitors, or deacons. If God has called us to that position, we are important.
We must keep faith that in due season we will reap our reward.
Jesus is our encourager in our time of need, and our eye of calm in the time of the storm. He will always be with us whatever comes our way.

Time, that pesky thing that drives us to distraction.
In the morning, there never seems to be enough. We rush and rush, and still, the clock hands move faster than we do.
Then we visit the dentist’s office. The hands on the clock slow to a crawl. What? Don’t they know we’ve got to be back in the office in thirty minutes? Let’s get this done!
We can easily forget God’s view of time and the nature of who we are. Our mornings, our visits to the dentist’s office … all are a blink in God’s grand scheme.
Psalm 56:4 gives us a view into our eternal nature in Christ:
“In God, whose word I praise— in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?”
Two simple sentences but a whole volume of meaning. Let’s unlock it.
Key No. 1:
In God, whose word I praise.
There are three truths here. Truth #1: In God. Everything. All creation. Us, them, every moment of every day. It is all in God. Truth #2: Whose word. He speaks, and creation happens. The words of his mouth are our reality. Truth #3. I praise. When we lift our voices in praise to him, we are giving God value for his lovingkindness toward us.
Key No. 2:
In God I trust and am not afraid.
Our first part says: In God I trust. That means with everything. Our finances, our relationships, every part of who we are. The final part says: I am not afraid. No fear, no worries, no sleepless nights. In him we feel secure, complete, comforted.
Key No. 3:
What can mere mortals do to me?
We are the children of the eternal God, the creator of all that was, is, and shall be. When we come to Christ and find our salvation in him, we are established as more than human, with an eternal destiny to live forever with him. What can mortals do to destroy that eternal connection with the God of the cosmos?
So, time. It will continue to be a hassle in the short view. In the long view? Eternity is coming, and we will spend it with our Lord.

When our children are disobedient, we cannot bless them with the bounty we would like. They haven’t proven they can accept the responsibility that goes with the blessings.
However, obedient children earn the right to enjoy all the blessings we can shower upon them. We know they will handle them wisely.
God feels the same way. In fact, in Deuteronomy 28:1-14, God gives us seven blessings that will come our way if we obey his Word.
Blessing #1:
He will give us honor among the people around us.
The only condition for this honor is to observe all the commandments he has given us in his Word.
Blessing #2:
We will not be able to escape all the good things he wishes to give us.
When we listen to the voice of God, his blessings will come and find us wherever we may happen to be. They will literally chase us down, whether in our homes, at our jobs, or as we travel the most remote areas of the globe.
Blessing #3:
Everything we touch will prosper.
Our children will make us proud. We will be successful at our place of employment. Our pantries will be packed, our gas tanks filled, and our bank accounts solvent.
Blessing #4:
We will never know the end of all God wants to do for us.
The Scriptures tell us that we will be blessed when we come in, and we will be blessed when we go out. As we live out our lives, his blessings will continue to flow through everything we do.
Blessing #5:
God will fight our battles for us.
Not only will God be our champion, the enemy will be so frightened at God’s majestic power that he will come at us head on, but at the sight of God, the enemy will scatter in seven different directions.
Blessing #6:
The Father will oversee all that he has given us.
He wishes to make us his holy people, and his hand on us will be an example to the world. Everyone will see us and be afraid to go against us, for they will know God’s blessings are upon us.
Blessing #7:
He will make us the head and not the tail.
The treasures of heaven will shower us, and we will channel our blessings to those around us. We will be givers of advice to those without direction; we will be the face of God before all people; and they will know his majesty through us.
God’s bounty knows no limits. When we follow his commands, the windows of heaven are opened, and he showers his blessings on us.

A spy’s true strength is in his anonymity. He must be able to step into any situation, complete his assignment, and step out again, never recognized for exactly who he is.
He must be able to disappear into the woodwork, to be swallowed into the crowd, to become invisible against a sea of faces.
Yet, when he contacts his superiors, he must be clearly identifiable, leaving no doubt that he is who he says he is. The spy must be able to prove he is who he claims to be.
Paul was a man of many faces. Oh, we do not see him that way now, for we have had two thousand years to define just who this man was. However, in A.D. 64, he was still living out the life of the person we now know as one of the greatest Apostles of all time.
Paul’s contemporaries did not have the advantage of two millennia to give them the perspective we have today. Paul was under pressure to make his identity clear each and every time he communicated with his fellow believers. In Colossians 1:1, Paul begins his epistle by laying out his credentials in three clear proofs.
Identity Proof #1: Paul, an Apostle of Jesus Christ...
To us, with millennia of hindsight at our disposal, this statement is obvious. However, in the Early Church, this was not accepted by everyone. Paul had to make his position clear. The church is led by the Holy Spirit. Paul had received the revelation of grace through the Spirit, and it was through this authority that he could lead the church.
Identity Proof #2: Through the Will of God...
The early Christians were often generous in supporting the burgeoning church. A wandering “prophet” could make good money pretending to share the Word of God.
However, only God could place a person into the office of prophet or apostle. Man did not have the authority to do so.
Paul wanted the proof of his authority to be God.
Identity Proof #3: And Timothy our Brother...
Timothy was a much younger companion to Paul, one who had been very beneficial in Paul’s ministry. To associate himself with Timothy was to gain approval from those who knew and appreciated Timothy’s ministry.
Paul didn’t stop there. As a spy must identify himself to his superiors, so must the spy confirm the identity of those to whom he reports. Hence, Colossians 1:2, in which Paul also lays out the identity of those to whom he writes in three clear confirmations.
Identity Confirmation #1: To the Saints...
This phrase is a clear indication of one thing. Paul had no doubt of the heart of the Colossian brethren. Paul recognized in his words that the moment a person accepts Christ, he becomes a saint. There is no delay, no proving of “miracles,” no wait time after the person dies. The acceptance of Jesus makes one a saint.
Identity Confirmation #2: And Faithful Brethren in Christ...
Paul was not blind. Not all those in the body at Colosse were as invested in their Christian walk as others. Paul was writing to the faithful among the church.
Identify Confirmation #3: Which are at Colosse...
This epistle was written for one body, and one only. The needs of the believers were (and are) very specific, and Paul was attuned to the individual. He knew that the message of Christ was not one-fits-all. What the Colossian body needed to hear was vastly different than what the Corinthians needed. Paul introduced his letter as such, letting the people know just whom he was writing to.
Finally, Paul could greet his audience. They knew exactly where he stood, and he had called them out for exactly who they were. The business side of his introductions was cleared out of the way, and the real message could start.
“Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.”
Paul knew where his strength lay. It flowed from the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Spirit. Without them, he had no identity at all, and his life was worthless.
When God confirms our identity, we become someone of incalculable worth.

Here’s something for us to think about.
We have promises in Christ that the devil is eager to hide from us.
The awesome truths in these verses are brimming with God’s power. Let’s look at them now.
Power Verse #1:
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)
This is one of the most quoted verses in the Bible, and sometimes we forget the power in its words. WHOSOEVER! That’s me and you and everyone who chooses Christ!
Power Verse #2:
“He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.” (Colossians 1:13-14)
The third word is this verse says we are DELIVERED! The chains of sin are broken, we are no longer condemned … we are redeemed!
Power Verse #3:
“I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20)
Our old life has been CRUCIFIED! It’s gone, dead, no longer able to rise up and haunt us. We live a new life in Christ by faith! He loves us and calls us his own.
So now you know. Truth exposed. You’ll never read these verses the same again. You are CHOSEN. You are REDEEMED. You are the TREASURED CHILD of the King.
Rejoice for you are loved by God.
