The children of Israel had fled Egypt after 400 years of captivity. The Promised Land had been overrun during those years by competing groups of people. To regain their rightful inheritance, there were enemies to conquer and lands to divide. The book of Numbers is about upcoming war, for it will be war against the people of Canaan. Those who have usurped Israel’s inheritance will not want to let go willingly. The children of Israel had to be made into an army. When the Lord—the greatest statistician in all history—spoke to Moses, telling him to number Israel, he was very specific about how to count the people. The data had to be skewed in favor of victory, not pride. The numbers had to reflect whether Israel could actually win her battles. Numbers 1:42-43 is a good example of God’s thoroughness. God gave six qualifications that determined how the people were to be numbered. The snooze button on our alarm is much more than five extra minutes of sleep. That little button is in reality a second chance; it’s our opportunity to postpone the inevitable. It can also become that sudden realization you are late for work. If we let it, it can turn into a traffic ticket. Or worse, it might become that dreaded call into our supervisor’s office to discuss our timely attendance (or lack thereof). Then why do we enjoy snoozing our alarms so much? It’s the hope they provide. We see that little button, and something springs up in us to tap it. In spite of the facts, we become convinced that those few extra minutes with our eyes closed will make up for the late hours we’ve insisted on keeping. The devil understands this concept with amazing clarity. He slaps his snooze button on everything he can find. However, we can’t afford to reach out and tap the devil’s snooze button and simply go back to sleep. We have all heard the phrase “blood is thicker than water.” It means that family ties are stronger than those of friendship, nationality, or religion. However, what about when sibling rivalry tears our families apart? Galatians 4:4-7 tells us we are adopted as sons into the family of God. In biblical times, to be a son meant something different than it does today. To be a son meant a responsibility to uphold the family name, the beliefs and traditions, and the integrity of the family’s honor. It was a huge responsibility, and to discard it carelessly was to insult those who also carried the same name. We see this in Luke 15 in the story of the Prodigal Son. The older brother was incensed, because the family name had been dishonored, and now his father was welcoming his wayward brother back into the fold. Technology constantly requires us to get smarter. A single remote control operates our TV, the DVR, the lights, and the ceiling fan. We maintain friendships on social media, and we have computer screens in our cars. However, are all these skills making us wiser? In 1 Kings 3, Solomon followed the instructions of his father David, and because his actions showed he loved the Lord, God appeared to him in a dream. God said, “Ask me whatever you want, and it will be yours.” Solomon asked for only one thing: wisdom. God was pleased and gave him wisdom plus the things he didn’t ask for: wealth and honor. Your children may be showing you how to run the remote control. You see Facebook is constantly reinventing itself to make itself “easier for use”. Our cars sometimes talk to us, explaining how to operate themselves. What tells us how to make ourselves wiser though? That's a good question. We all know the adage that when something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Bernie Madoff bilked unwitting investors out of more than $50 billion dollars. How? He offered a gleaming reward of high returns on easy investments. His returns were much too good to be true, but responsible, discerning investors fell like dominoes, throwing their money at him like slops to the swine. If savvy investors can fall for a Bernie Madoff scheme, how can the Christian avoid the devil when he comes to us in sheep’s clothing?  That's a good question.
