I believe it is safe to assume that all people who have the ability to communicate understand what at least part “a” of this verse is explaining. “Death and lie are in the power of the tongue…” We have the ability to build people up with our words and encourage them. But we also have the ability to tear someone down and hurt them with our words. A comparative statement that can closely relate to this is James’ letter in chapter three. For instance, James explains that “With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness.” While it is not EXACTLY the same, the concept remains the same for part “a” of this verse as we have the power to do both things: tear people down (cursing men) and lifting people up (praising them).
Part “b” of this verse goes on to explain that those who love the power of the tongue will eat of her fruit. In a sense, this means what you sow out of your mouth you will eat the fruit of the labor. If you sow words of life, encouragement, and affirmation you will eat those fruits. Whereas, in the same thought, if you reap words of dissent, discouragement, and death you will, in turn, eat of that fruit as well.
How can you apply this verse to your own lives, Christians? Understanding and knowing the effect of the things that you say can play a major part in being an example of Christ to a lost and broken world. We are called by Christ to love our neighbor. This would mean that we are called to do all things out of love, even if those things are hard for the other person to hear. That does not mean we are tearing them down, for if they accept our words with humility and wisdom those words could provide life for the person whereas the opposite may be true as well.
Speak life into the lives of others, Christians.
