On Today, April 2
Argentine troops invade and seize the Falkland Islands in 1982.
The Falklands are a British overseas territory, and the Brits do not take the invasion well. Over the next 74 days, the might of the British military fist smashes the Argentine troops and reclaims the islands.
Ironically, the invasion by the Argentines has less to do with wanting the Falklands than with propping up a military junta led by Lieutenant General Leopoldo Galtieri. His oppressive regime with its poor economic management was failing at home, and he hoped to promote nationwide patriotism in support of his flagging authority. He was booted out of office later that year under the black cloud of the Falkland invasion and Argentina's humiliating loss to the United Kingdom.
