Luke the beloved physician and Demas greet you.  Greet the brethren who are in Laodicea, and Nymphas and the church that is in his house.
Colossians 4:14-15
Luke was a beloved physician who personally took care of Paul. Luke accompanied Paul on his missionary journeys to Asia and identified himself in Scripture with the word “we” (Acts 20:5-6). He was a committed disciple of Christ who wrote the Gospel of Luke and the book of Acts. He dedicated them to Theophilus, giving him an accurate account of Christ’s life (Luke 1:3; Acts 1:1). Luke referred to him as “most excellent Theophilus,” so in all probability, he was a high-ranking Roman officer, whose name means “loved of God” or “friend of God.” It is believed Theophilus was converted to Christianity by Luke.
Demas, at this time, walked with the Lord, but later on in his life, he departed from the Lord. Sadly, Demas fell away from Christ––it happens. What was the reason he stopped following Christ? The short answer is found in 2 Timothy 4:10: ...Demas has forsaken me, having loved this present world....This was such a tragedy; the world took over his life.
Perhaps you know of people who have departed from following Christ. Instead, they went back into the world––back to their sin. Every day they are in jeopardy, as they could die in their sin and be separated from God for all eternity. May God help us to pray for them!
Paul also greeted Nymphas and the church in his house. The name Nymphas in the Greek language means “sacred.” He opened his home and taught the Word of God. Interestingly, although Paul never visited these churches in Colosse, in the book of Revelation, the Church in Laodicea was mentioned and received a sharp rebuke from Jesus (Revelation 3:14-22). They were not as dedicated as when they first begun.
I find that it is not how a person starts their Christian walk, but how they finish. In your life, are you still fully dedicated to God by loving and serving Him? Have you fallen away and departed from your relationship with Christ? Is the reason for your departure a love for this present world?
You can blame circumstances, but backsliding always begins in the heart.
